Hosted on Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Presented by:
Linda Langford, Sc.D., Associate Center Director, Higher Education Center for Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Violence Prevention
Amy Kiger, M.S., Director, Office of Violence and Substance Abuse Prevention, University of Central Missouri

Campus-based alcohol and other drug (AOD) and violence prevention efforts are more effective when they are guided by the latest research and tailored to local campus circumstances. Key to this process is conducting a campus-based assessment and consulting the research literature. Linda Langford will begin the webinar with a description of a strategic planning process that can be used to create data-driven, tailored AOD and violence prevention efforts. Amy Kiger, who directs both violence prevention and substance abuse prevention efforts at the University of Central Missouri, will then describe examples of how her campus has gathered and used data and research to guide the development of both its sexual assault prevention and AOD prevention initiatives. Her presentation will include recommendations and tips for conducting local assessments and using the data effectively.

At the conclusion of this 90-minute Webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of systematic planning in creating comprehensive, tailored AOD and violence prevention efforts
  • List the key steps in a strategic planning process
  • Describe how one campus used data and research to create their violence prevention and AOD prevention efforts
  • List several approaches for locating and collecting data and research for prevention planning
  • Access additional prevention resources from the Higher Education Center.
